Bring Back the Romance

Romance can be tricky.  A job change, money issues, a new child; the stresses of life always play a part in our relationship with our partner.  And unfortunately, romance tends to fizzle with time if you aren’t constantly working at it.  No matter how “perfect” you are for each other, we are all human and subject to relationship lags.  The key is to find ways to rekindle that fire you remember so long ago.  Here’s some simple to make it happen…

First – Ask yourself what distanced the two of you in the first place.  Was it work, a health issue, a family member that interfered?  Figure out the biggest reason why you are no longer on the same page.  Once you establish a reason, you’re already headed in the right direction to finding romance again.

Second – Get back to the basics.  If there really isn’t a reason why the two of you are distant, then maybe it’s just time to revisit the past.  What was it about your partner that you were first attracted to?  Was it his adventurous side?  Her athletic ability?  Revisit what initially inspired your relationship and re-explore them.  Spend more quality time together doing things you really enjoy.  Having a date night scheduled once a week gives you something to look forward to at the end of your week and just may be the answer to your lull.

Third – Do you love the element of surprise?  One of the perks of relationships is when your partner surprises you.  Whether it’s flowers, dinner reservations, or a weekend getaway, surprises make us feel good.  They tell us that your partner is thinking about you and that they still care.  Surprises don’t have to be expensive, just thoughtful.

Finally – If you still can’t find a way to connect, perhaps seek couples therapy.  A therapist once told me that roles in relationships constantly change and evolve (even though people typically do not).  A new job, relocating to a new area, or becoming a parent can be taxing on a relationship, so addressing these issues is important.
